I want a psychological explanation, not "because it's fun." I know it's fun. :-)

myhusband does that all the time .. and i thought it was just because he was immature.. but i guess theres another underlying reason.. they want to feel like they are the controller of what happens.... they can scare you... piss you off... make you laugh... it just depends on what they want to do... i dont know if you notice but the pranksters i know are very controlling with their significant others....

It is an underlying anger. They are angry and want to take their anger out on someone. Usually, they don't even realize they're angry.

Different people react differently to this type of stress.

Some really DO take it out on someone by means of fist fights or physical abuse of a family member.

Other's, with an ability to supress it to some degree, will let off steam by playing practical jokes on friends and family.

They can easily justify that in their mind as being playful and harmless. This way, they can walk away without a guilty conscious.
