The reference is from the Bible...
You are the light of the world, you are the salt of the earth...
It means that someone is a good, moral person. The general meaning is that morality preserves the earth and seasons it, like salt. Jesus is saying that his followers must be good examples in the world.

Salt is a preservative and it makes things taste better. Christ referred to Christians with this phrase. The earth would be unbearable without Christians making a difference (a lot of hospitals were built by Christians, for example) and it would be unbearable without Christians in prayer on behalf of their neighbors. If Christians stopped praying, you'd notice the difference.

To be the salt of the earth simply put means to possess good, grounded, solid, down to earth qualities we would hope to have and the courage, compassion, moral and ethical fortitude to be.
All things you would desire in your parents and your children would hope to be their's.
