The doubt that the only answer is the 1972 Miami Dolphins. You can say the bulls of the 90's, the Bears of '85, the Cowboys of the 90's but did any of those have undefeated seasons? I don't think so. The Dolphins of '72 coached by the legendary, winningest coach in NFL history, Don Shula. Hall of Fmaer Bob Griese was the quarterback and he passed the ball to Paul Warfield another Hall of Famer. The running game was dominated by Runningbacks Mercury Morris and Larry Csonka and they each got over 1,000 yards becoming the first Runningbacks on one team to do that in one season. The offensive line also had Hall of Famers Jim Langer and Larry Little. The '72 dolphins went on to go 17-0 ,undefeated , through the whole entire regular season, playoffs, and super bowl. Until this day no other NFL or any team of any major porfessional sport has done that. the 1985 bears had lost only one game in their entire successful season but guess what: A win is a win and a loss is a loss and one game changes everything. The 1972 Dolphins are the only team to be graced with the title of "Perfect Season" , not the Bulls of the 90's or '85 Bears or any other team you can name.

I just wanted too say that the 72 Dolphins have too be considered the best one single season team they were undefeated, but I just wanted too point out that Brain Griese, did not play every game he was injured in week 5 against San Diego, and 38 year old Earl Morrall was thr QB until Griese returned in the AFC Title game so Morrall had 10 of those 17 wins just wanted too point that out, it's like everybody forgets that when they talk about the 72 Dolphins, so the fact that more than half the wins came with a back-up qaurterback makes the accomplishment even more tremendous, would the Bulls have won 72 games if MJ didn't play in half of them, and the 85 Bears without Payton, or Jim, I don't think so, that is why I say the 72 Dolphins had the greatest single season ever.

Well the 72 Dolphins were undefeated but Im gonna go with the 85 Bears. They pitched two shutouts in the playoff games prior to the Super Bowl and then won the championship by over 30 points. They went 15-1 in the regular season and had the greatest player of all time on their team Walter Payton.

NFL: The 72 Dolphins (undfeated) or the 85 Bears (dominance).
Beyond a single year the 70's Steelers had like 10+ Hall of Famers on their teams.
NCAA College B-Ball: One of the undefeated UCLA teams.
Either 1971-1972 (30 wins and no losses) or 1972-1973 (again 30 wins and no losses) in the middle of an...OH MY GOD...88 wins in a row.
NCAA football: 1971 Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Average score 39. Average opponents score 8.
Heisman Trophy winner, and a 13-0 undefeated season.
A bowl win over Alabama...was a very close 38-6.
NBA: The 1971-1972 Lakers with Jerry West (the best white boy hoop player ever) and Wilt (the best hoop player ever). They won 69 games and at one span 33 straight. Oh my GOD!
And before I get barraged, West and Larry Bird are equally #1.
Baseball: The 1927 Yankees
In '27 they won 110 games and lost 44 and had Ruth and Gehrig.
Murderers Row and 6 Hall of Famers.

NFL-
85 Bears or the 40 Bears? ('40 Bears championship game? a mere technicality 73-0)
I'llgo with the "85 Bears.
MLB - I'll say close is the '84 Tigers 35-5 to begin season, never slowed down on playoffs, won in 5 over outmatched Padres.
NBA - da Bulls 72-10 Lakers are close but no one believed they could beat the Bulls.
NHL don't follow hockey I would'nt know
NCAA football - 1940's Oklahome Sooners 47 game winning streak over five seasons. Nuff said?

'72 phins 17-0 but the '85 Bears were a better team and I think had a better season. Or the '95-'96 Chicago Bulls went 72-10 that was a great season.

Considering the parity of the league, the Chicago Bulls team that went 72-10 gets my vote.
This wasn't their first championship season, so everybody was gunning for them.
A close second would be De La Salle High school's football team that won 151 consecutive games. De La Salle is in Concord, CA

The 1972 Miami Dolphins, 17-0. How can you get any better than that?
