Some people are quite literal...and anything remotely abstract escapes them. You must have a sense of humor to appreciate irony. Real humor is often quite intelligent (and I need not comment further) and of course, not everyone sees the same things as funny...or ironic. I have an over developed sense of irony...for I see the natural humor contained in life and human nature. I believe it makes me more tolerant...and I see the irony in this statement. lol

Really? I never have had that problem. Irony and sarcasm are my bread and butter, babe.
Perhaps you need to move to an irony-friendly area. Nothing worse than having a wonderful witticism fall with a leaden thud to the ground - pearls before swine and all that.
Clever Americans get it, as do clever folk from other places.

Because it's subtle. Simple as that. It doesn't stare you in the face, like other forms of humor that Americans are apparently fond of (like toilet humor...I don't understand the reasoning behind this; it's not funny, it's disgusting and juvenile). I know that irony doesn't necessarily have to be humorous, but for the sake of argument, we're working off the assumption that it is. Anyway, irony doesn't hold your hand, and say "okay, now this is where you're supposed to react." That kind of thing, supposedly, just isn't appreciated here.
