What would be a useful educational background for a career in magazine publishing as an art director, magazine editor, or photo editor. Can you recommend any good colleges, and required experiences.

I'd suggest Journalism and/or English at any Ivy League or Big Ten school. In media, your alumni connections are even more useful than in most other professions, so choose your school wisely.

As for art direction or photo editing, you should, obviously, study art. Be gunning for internships as early as possible and on your own, don't expect your school's placement department to carry the load.

I am looking for those same things as you (competition! haha)...

I am majoring in Mass Communications/Journalism, and minoring in Sociology (that doesn't really matter but I just thought I'd throw that in there). I go to Boise State, because I live here and I couldn't afford much else. I think that to some degree, it's not necessarily the college, but the grades you get, the degree you earn, and your motivation level. Although if you can get into and pay for a better school, more power to ya! Wish I could!

Right now, I'm looking for internships in any kind of journalism field to gain experience in the industry. The school I go to has a listing of TONS of good internships in the city for students (as I'm sure any college does). Also, try a website called www.wetfeet.com/internships. It has tons of internship listings, and you can browse by internship or by city.

Good luck!
