You can wash it on the delicate cycle with cold water and hang it up to dry.

I put trainers in the washing machine occasionally and they come out OK so I think you could do the same with a backpack made of canvas or a similar fabric. Maybe there's a small label with washing instructions somewhere in it? Dry it in the open air so it doesn't shrink.

I always have to wash my kids backpacks and yes they turn out fine. I even put them in the dryer.

First, we need to know what it is made of. Is it plastic, fabric, or what? If it's so dirty that you would otherwise throw it away, I would wash it but not put it in the dryer.
Hope this helps.

My kids have some from jansport and I have one I use when caving (which means it gets very dirty) and they've done beautifully in the washer and dryer.

Some bags may be fragile, but probably not too many are, and if its that dirty, would you want to use it anyway?

I wash my daughters backpack all the time. I even put it in the dryer and it comes out fine. =)

Yes, I do it all the time. I wouldn't put it in the dryer though, let it air dry.

Just don't use bleach, it'll attack the threads. I would air-dry, maybe stuffing it with some newspaper to keep its shape. If it has an internal frame, I'd hand wash it. Which reminds me, I have to do that to mine.

Go ahead and wash it, but when you put it in the dryer, put in on low!

It depends on the material and color. I have a white one and I just throw it in the washer, its fine. There aren't any defects.
