CHEATING its a player scoring more or less to satisfy his own bet

Most bets on a ball game have a point spread. That means one team will win by X points. Example: The Cardinals are playing the 49ers. The experts may say that the 49ers will win by 14 points. Bets are then made on each team but if you bet on the 49ers you have to give away 14 points. (If the 49ers win by 12 points and you bet on the 49ers you would lose your bet.)

Points can be "shaved" by someone playing on the field intentionally keeping the score low. If the 49ers were up by 12 points a player may drop the ball on purpose, or miss a field goal, or a tackle. For the standings in the NFL the 49ers would win but a player could bet on the Cardinals and keep the spread below the 14 points so that he, or a friend, would win the bet.

If a football team is not scoring on purpose, and even causing the opposite team to win on purpose, then that means that they are shaving points.

not doing the best on the field you can as an athlete. games have pointspreads that people bet on, say one team is favored to win by 10 points, an athlete may bet on the other team to cover the 10 points, so if your team is up by 7 and you as a qb have a wide open receiver in the endzone rather than get him the ball and be up by 14, you would make a bad pass, fumble, etc to not make the play. or as a wr you would drop the ball, as a rb you may fumble the ball, or trip before scoring, thus shaving points to make sure that your bet wins

Trying to not score for a bet, usually it just constitutes making an intentional error to lose the game. Kind of like Vanderjaght missing the field goal against the steelers. I have never seen anybody miss that far over in pro football. Never. But it can't be proven, nor will I accuse. its just fishy
