My dad wants me to take over his business. I never saw a female general contractor before and wonder what would male sub-contractors feel when a lady is his contractor.

Women often times do better in this field. You just need to be confident and not take any crap. Don't be girly & bubbly or you won't be taken serious. If your dad has established himself as a good person to do business with, you already have a great start with his contacts, etc.
If you're questioning it or aren't sure you can do it, you shouldn't. The women I know in this industry never asked if men would accept them or how many other women are in their field. They just wanted to do it and went for it. Good Luck.

The construction industry is the most sexist and racist industry that I have ever encountered. You are guaranteed to have a constant stream of prejudice against you. You need to be smarter than your subs, or they will take advantage of you. If you are going to take over your father's position, I suggest that you work with him for a couple years to learrn the ropes, only use your initials in correspondence, and hire really big male project managers who support you.

yeah it's fine. there's more and more girls getting into the business... on the equipment and as surveyors at the excavation company i work
most of the guys are respectful towards the girls, though if you're cute they will all be flirting with you
they will talk abut your ***/**** behind your back, but not to your face
for sub-contracters it shouldn't be a problem. a professional is paid to do a job. all they can expect from you is that you do yours so you're not wasting their time. but if your dad has had you around the business then there's nothing you don't already know,... except we talk about your ***/**** behind your back.. but all men do that.. about all women

All I can say is watch the movie "NORTH COUNTRY"! It is very eye opening; not that you are not capible of handling the task but as a female unfortunately we are the weaker sex (let them try and deliver a baby)!! Good Luck with whatever your decision and with getting their respect

well i'm a guy with a trade and i assure you for the most part that women gc's are as accepted as men . mind you we do make remarks but that is only because we are imature little idiots!
