I wanted to change the backlight setting to 'always on', but I don't want to cut an hour or more off of my battery life. For anyone who's actually tried this, will keeping the backlight on have any major effect?

Yes it will drain the battery significantly and if used like that all the time could put a strain on the actual battery life.
