Can you get sick from swallowing too much chlorine in a pool?

I just started taking a swim class at the college and I burp all through class because I keep swallowing the pool water (not intentionally) it just happens while I take the breath. I'm not the best swimmer that is why I am taking the class.

Yes the chlorine can accumulate fast and become toxic. Fortunately, one gets sick before they are truly poisoned.
