If congress has so much power then what is the point of the president?

checks and balances, he can veto there laws and he can also introduce new laws on behalf of the people who voted for him.

Well their are three Branches of the US Govt. Judicial, which of course involves the Courts, Legislative Branch which is both houses of Congress. Executive Branch which is the President and his staff. They are supposed to have checks and balances to make sure that no one branch has more power than the other two, but nowadays it seems that they are all working in unison against the democrats. It seems funny to me that Judges need to have a political affiliation, but I guess that is just how it is.

Checks and Balances,There are 3 branches to the federal goverment,the Executive ( the presidency),the Judicial ( supreme court) and the Legislative (congress).

Its called checks and balances. In addition the President is a figurehead who represents the citizens of the United States of America. Generally speaking it is advantageous to have one person in position to speak and rallies the peoples interest. He is however, no more important in the overall scheme of our government's foundation.

Our government is supposed to be a system of checks and balances. That's why there is the president, congress, the senate and the judicial system, they are supposed to check on each other.

Look at it this way... Congress is 500+ people, and if they don't agree they have to sit and discuss things, which they LOVE to do for hours and days and weeks and months. The President is there to handle day to day things that require immediate action, such as the military.
