I have heard that Mercedes and Bmw used to make plane engines back in world war 2. The three-point star emblem symbol somewhat same as the bmw sign symbolizes the propellers of the plane.

DMG was Daimler's parent company back in 1910. Daimler made the first internal combustion car. DMG produced complete engines for 3 sectors: cars, boats and airplanes. Each star represents one of those sectors.

There's another story that says that Daimler sent a card to his wife with a 3 point star on it saying that that star is what will shine over his factories. I'm inclined to believe the first story.

Mercedes used to build engines for aircraft and boats, following the purchase of Maybach (who made engines for trains/boats/aircraft) in the 1960's the air and sea division became MTU.

MTU was sold earlier this year
