unless the email is coming from behind a proxy at which point all you will get is the Proxy servers IP which is probably what you have.
MOST people have proxy servers they are going through

even from home.

its called the World Secure Servers

There are a number of ways to track an IP address. There is an excellent article at "Tracing An Email" -- onimoto.com (http://www.onimoto.com/cache/50.html).

"The purpose of this guide is to show the process involved in tracing an email. The first step required to tracing an email is finding out the headers of the email. What are headers? Email headers are lines added at the top of an email message that are used by servers as the email goes on route to get delivered. Generally email clients only show the standard To, From, and Subject headers, but there are more." -- excerpt from the article.

If you are just interested in a geographic location then go to IP Address Locator at http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?GetLocation

Under the "IP Address to Locate," just type in the address and it will tell you where the ip address is located.

look for the FULL HEADER option..usually way down of the page or upper right corner.
FULL HEADER will show the complete path of that email including the IP addresses
