well more ram is a good start. But if you use the internet you are bound to have endless crap clogging up your machine.

Remove all programs you can see and dont use
Download free version of AVG and run and remove rubbish
Download free version of Ewidow and do same
Download CCleaner

But the best option and this made my machine superfast, is to download and use Tunexp 1.5. Is a free program allowing you to alter the default settings of xp. You can pick and choose what you want - and comes with a very helpful Help section explaining exactly what each option entails.

Then there are lots of good articles across the web giving these answers and more. Well worth an evenings time.

This process will clean your computer and will return it to a pretty good speed.

Try running an Anti-spyware software like Spybot, Adaware, or Microsoft Windows Defender

Once you clean your computer from spyware, try running an Antivirus (AVG Antivirus is pretty good)

you can get a free one here http://www.grisoft.com

Then clean all your internet temporary files, cookies, and history.

Open Internet Explorer
go to Tools ==> Internet Options ==>

Click Delete Cookies, Delete Files, and Clear History

Click OK.

and also you can remove items that run at Start up

If your computer is old and you need hardware to speed it up, then you need ram, processor, etc.

Hope it helps!!!

while some of the answers below are pretty funny, you can upgrade your computer. I would take a few things into consideration first. a. how old is your computer b. is your computer upgradable c. would it be cheaper to buy a new computer. d. how much is it going to cost you to have a tech install the upgrades. sometimes a new computer can be the best answer, but that does depends on many variables. good luck

Free up some hard drive space, including the deletion of temporary internet files (you can do this by selecting tools on your web browser, followed by internet options, then delete files in the temporary internet files section) Also upgrading your ram will help and if you can find one compatible with your motherboard, buy a faster processor.

Clean out the Internet Explore, History, Temp Files, and Temp Internet Explore files. In addition; dump out the Recycle Bin and after wards run a defrag twice. You may also want to check out your virtual memory; it might be set too low. Anything from 750MB to 1150MB, will do.

Need more detail (lots of details).

Could (possibly) get faster processor, more RAM, faster hard drive, video card or an OS re-install. Could be that the main board just isn't going to go any faster.

Describe your machine in detail.

Describe what it is you're trying to do that makes you think it's too slow.

Dig into your wallet and decide how much you're willing to spend to make it faster.

Use the disk tools to defragment the drives. Get rid of temp files. Get rid of internet cookies. Buy more RAM, get a better processor, uninstall programs you never use... the list goes on.

You should probably try a different internet service. Dial-up is slow because its cheap. DSL is the best internet kind. Or maybe if your computer is goin slow you should get it checked for a virus and any computer should have virus protection.
