No! Trash talking happens in every sport at every level! If FIFA tries to punish Materazzi then they should punish EVERY player in the World Cup who said something negative to another player! Zidane is a complete idiot. He should of stepped his game up because that would of been the best way to get back at Materazzi. Zidane has lost his temper many times before so how can anyone say Materazzi is to blame for Zidane's behavior!

Boy andygurl is on a roll tonight. I agree with her again. Plus I almost think that at this point it would heal a lot of wounds if FIFA at least stood by the rules they implemented and sanctioned Materazzi. Its not like he's not going to be on the field again but it would at least put him officially on notice that there is a line. More importantly, maybe it will tell everyone else the same thing. Clearly I think every player learned that headbutting is not a good move.

No. Trash-talking and insults is part of any sport. Zidane for all the marvelous things he's done on the field wont be vilified too much and his legacy wont be harmed nor tarnished. However, he should've been the bigger person and gone down the field and scored a goal, via a headshot, and hurt Materazzi in that manner in lieu of headbutting him.

If you can't take the heat stay off the pitch...I think Zidane is a child and deserves whatever he gets...he may have cost his team the World Cup...he is a selfish self indulgent player and he owes his team and France an apology...maybe Materazzi shouldn't have said what he said..but that's football...

my god, does it even matter anymore? like one thing i read, if fifa started giving out sanctions for "bad talk" or "name calling" they'd be overwhelmed with alot of work to do. during a stressful game and after all the final, what do you expect? everyone to be nice to each other? hello, we arent in kindergarden anymore. i say just leave it. what's done is done. sure materazzi was out of line, but what can you do about it? zidane was the one who started it as well. by sneering at materazzi and looking him up and down saying "if you want my shirt ill give it to you afterwards." so it was both their fault. so leave it as a life lesson learned, not sanctions

Absolutely not.
This proves only one point - that Muslims are extremists, no matter what. A religion of peace and love?? This man should NEVER had reacted the way he did...and he only did because of the religious nature of the slurs...
Why didnt Zidane figure that this is EXACTLY what Italy was attempting to do - have him get himself tossed out of the game? Does not taunting go on in every major league sport? (It does in America...) His reaction should have been to laugh at the Italian, and comment on how the Pope is a hypocrite or one of THOUSANDS of other slurs possible against teh Catholic Church. To strike out in anger only proves that Muslims are extremists about their religion. Period.
Heck, its their religion that says THEY cannot make representations of Mohhamed - not ME. Yet they get violent when someone OUTSIDE Of their religion makes a caracature.... LAME!

I'm no soccer expert, but it has to be the wimpiest sport in the history of Man if they sanction a player for talking - talking!
It doesn't matter what he said. Are there any words that justify a violent outburst from a person? If someone insults my mother, can I punch them in the face? Knife them? Shoot them? They did, afterall, insult my mother.
Zidane is king of all idiots for reacting so violently to cheap words and for most likely losing the World Cup for France. Way to go. Way to perform under pressure. Way to be a professional. Way to set an example for children - "Okay children, it's not okay to hit another person...unless they say something to you."

If he said anything that was below trash talking, that was abusive derogatory etc then most definitely. If FIFA are seriously going to stand by what they endorse and allege to stand for, they cannot condone or be seen to condone one act over the other. Let us not forget that BOTH players have blots in their playing history, so it cannot be said that just because one act was seen and the other fortunately not seen nor captured on audio that it did not occur. One can not exist without the other.

Ideally Materazzi would be punished as he is a known provocateur.
