I would like to know about some of the customs and traditions in Egypt. How are the women treated as compared to the men and so on.

Life in Egypt is cool.
there is sooo much customs and traditions but in short if you went to Cairo you'll see just a big city full of cars pollution and terrible traffic of course there are really poor areas and really good areas for rich ppl.
But it is normal and women in Egypt are treated good. mostly like men. some have jobs some rather stay at home some rich some poor but they are basically free to do what they want even their clothes they can wear Vail (hegab) or not but most chose to wear it over their normal clothe.
it's very hard to find work in Egypt though whether you're a male or female
Tourism is excellent in Egypt and Egyptians like tourists and a lot of them understand English

"What is life really like in Egypt?"
That question is very general and has a lot different kind of answers .. you need to be specific to a certain aspect of life you want to inquire about...

"How are the women treated as compared to the men and so on."
That is a specific one .. theoretically they are treated the same way....... practically speaking you cannot decide whether they are treated the same or not because it varies from situation to situation...... for example .. the stereotypical image about the relation between men and women in Egypt or other Arabic speaking countries(i know about my country only) which is "oppressed women in home" or "women rights's violations" or "imprisoned Egyptian women" is wrong ... i am not saying that there aren't any of things i mentioned and others ..... i am just saying that the image is blurred and not clear....in the past couple of years there were a minor improvement in the women's education(you know .. we have a lot of illiterate people) ..... sometimes some women abuse their husbands .. really .. i am thinking of starting Men's Rights Organization....just kidding ......... life in Egypt is hard for the majority of people ... say 96+ aren't having a pleasant life ... poverty and stuff like that ...lack of democracy ... etc. but if mean life during a visit , we have a huge number of places to visit in Egypt .. may be that is the best thing we have ... 20% of all the world's monuments are here in Egypt ..........
P.S. it is my pleasure to answer your questions about Egypt.

Egypt is chaotic, poor, rich, beautiful, dirty, ancient and modern.Anyone who has ever tried to cross a street in Cairo KNOWS how chaotic that is and can be quite scary. Nevertheless, I enjoyed my time in Egypt and always felt welcome by Egyptian people. Egypt is a third world country, but its people are first rate!

This will all depend , how you dress, and what group of Egyptians will you mix with? In poorer ares you will have to be more discreet.
