If its waterbased paint Goof-Off should do the trick. You can get it at Home Depot.

The only correct way to do it is to sand it off, but you can't just do part of the floor. Anything that will remove the paint will also take the varnish. I've got a bad feeling about this--there's no easy way to restore a wood floor. It's simple, but it's a lot of work. Make enough of a mistake and it may be damaged beyond repair--I assume they'll want to sell this house one day, so it matters in the long run even if they don't care now. You can't just stain in a few spots where you've removed the varnish--it will never match the rest of the floor. And then you need to put polyurethane over the stain to protect it, and you can't just do that in spots either for the same reason.

How about painting the entire floor a nice neutral color? I've never done it, but I've seen it in magazines where they were going for a rustic look.

As for what to charge, charge them the value of your services for two days, whatever that is--no one should take longer than 2 days to prep and paint an ordinary room. But based on the way you asked your question, I'd suggest that your not ready to take on restoring a wood floor.
