A couple of answers forgot to put the 6 stem into their plots. It is important that it is there; That would show that 59 is an outlier. You should NEVER omit a stem if there are no observations in it! Jerome B has the right idea.

5 | 9
6 |
7 | 0 2
8 | 7 9 9 9
9 | 2 5 9

The number in front of the line (called the stem) is the tens unit of the number, and the number after the line (called the leaf) is the ones unit.

First put the numbers into ascending numerical order like this: 59, 70, 72, 87, 89, 89, 89, 92, 95, 99. Then, decide what type of stem-and-leaf plot you will make. That is, here, we see that the range is 40, which is difference between the maximum (99) and the minimum (59) of our data set. We also see that all these values are two-digit values, so we ought to assign the first digit to the "stem" part of the plot and the second digit to the "leaf" part. We are basically segregating these values based on their first digits for some sort of comparative purpose. The plot looks like this (see link for my image):

From this plot, you can see the approximate shape of this distribution and make various other conclusions about the data.

make a horizontal line and then a longer vertical line so it looks like a cross. the stems go on the left and the leaves on the right. the stems and the 10s place so you would put 9 and then right below it on the next line 8, etc. on the right, put the ones place. on the right column next to the 9, you would put 2, 5, 9 to represent 92, 95, 99. i really can't do it on a computer but i'll try.

Ok: there are several possible ways of grouping which you can choose, but here is the one which I would use:

5|9
6|
7|02
8|79999
9|259

Basically, take the first digit, use it as the "stem", then take the second and add it as the leaf.
