As a long-time optimist... I'd have to agree that with perseverance and pulling the right strings you can achieve just about anything. However, the broader question of whether people get what they deserve... that doesn't always come through for everyone.

The more I learn about the world, the more I start to realize a certain few hard-to-swallow truths. The plagiarist will make the impossible deadline. The intelligent will find reasons to be smitten with the shallow and unreliable. The modest will get smothered by the pompous. It's sad and I really hate to admit that I think this way, but I think there's only a select few people that get what they deserve.

But then again, who's to judge what we deserve at all?

Yes, if you are determined and work towards something it is possible you will get what you want. But you must consider other factors around that might possibly pulling you down such as chance like being there at the right place and the right time and also other people who might have the same dream as you. In the end you may not get what you deserve even though you have worked hard on something.

For the answer 'Do you believe everyone gets what they deserve?' In a way yes, people can control themselves on how they feel/react or through their actions...the rest is just chance.

what you say is one of the most common and non accurate myths. What you deserve? what you think you deserve after one year (or ten) that you re struggling for it? things change, change the possibilities, the chance works on it..and the idea that what you give will be returned a way or another is worth on a theoric way only. The wordl isnt exact, and justice is but another myth.
If you ask for nothing, you will have it all seems to state some oriental faiths. it looks pretty true. You will have what you take,
not what you wanted or deserved. ( be it more or less)

Deserving is essentially passive; plus, it's abstract. I prefer to believe that people, by and large, get what they EARN – what they achieve through active and concrete exertions.

Just working hard isn't enough, though. One has to work intelligently.

Yeah slaves in South America digging gold in pits and sleeping in the muddy piles they entrench themselves in totally deserve everything that's coming to 'em.

Oh and George Bush worked damn hard to get where he is. We should all teach our children that if "they play their cards right" they could be as virtuous and upstanding as this great monolithic figure.

If you want any more counter-examples email me.

Fortunately this is not the case for those who believe in Christ. If that were the case, everybody would end up in Hell... but who believes in Christ, will be in Heaven...not because of good works, but just by pure grace...

We, as sinners, deserve Hell.

I think maybe we all get what we need rather then deserve, to push us to change how we are. Only when we suffer do we learn. Learning gives us freedom from the process.
