I am taking the msf course fri-sun and wonder what to expect. I know that the first day I will learn about the rules and the parts.

What kinds of drills will I be doing on the motorcycle?

The class takes on the assumption that students have never ridden a motorcycle. With that in mind, you start off doing drills with the engine off to get a feel for the weight of the motorcycle and how to use the brakes. You have a partner who will push you, and vice versa.
Later you get a feel for the clutch, so you slowly travel with both feet walking (duck walk) while working the clutch in first gear and the engine on. All the while, you practice the basic priniciples of how to mount a motorcycle and start the engine and turn off the motorcycle.
Then, you get to riding in a straight line with your feet off the ground in first gear.
Then, you practice shifting up and down gears.
After straight-line riding drills are done, you start doing turns. All the while, you learn how to brake, shift down, shift up, accelerate, and apply safety rules.
Cones are set up to do different drills to simulate real life situations.

Its Fun! you start out learning how to operate the MC and then it slow speed maneuver's. you don't go over 10-15 mph. you do serpentine, circles, hard stops, ( the hard stops you go 10-15mph and then you need to lock the breaks and come to a stop.)
EVERYTHING YOU PRACTICE IN THE CLASS, IS USED IN REAL LIFE.
I went through the course 1 1/2 yrs ago. THE BEST THING THAT I EVER DID.
also after you finish the class, think about taking the advanced class's after a couple of months. and every couple of years take an advanced riding course, it helps keep you refreshed. you pick up bad habits after a while.
good luck and have fun.. hope to see you out there on the road with the wind in your hair.....

At first, simple things like starting and stopping and using the clutch. Eventually, riding around cones and in circles.

The goal is to teach you how to work the machine safely.

Good for you for taking the course. Personally, I think it should be required for all new riders.
