Many people choose to be bi, because they are still exploring and deciding on whether they like the same sex or not. Some consider being bi as the second step towards becoming gay.

As you have correctly deduced, saying you're bisexual to fit in with the crowd and actually being bisexual are two different things.

However, why is this your problem?

I never showed a single sign of being bi when I was in high school. Oh I was as bi as the day is long, I just didn't show it.
Your friend could really be bi or she could just be trying to fit in. However I'm scratching my head as to why it is any of your f*cking business.

Try minding your own business and get your nose out of your friends sexual orientation. The truth will make itself known in time.

People cannot choose to be bisexual because it is not a choice. People are born straight, bi, lesbian, or gay. Some may know from a very young age while others figure it out later in life. Link below about bisexual myths, please read.

Of course there are the people that say they are bisexual as a fad and are really straight, or are lesbian/gay but think they will be more socially acceptable as bi, which is crazy because they get heat from both sides. Or people that may be questioning but want to use a label.

I don't think that it's a choice. I think it is something inside of a person that determines their sexuality. It's possible that she is just saying that she is bi-sexual trying to fit in with the group she hangs around with.

No one chooses to be bisexual, unless they're faking it.
