Speaking as a former hamster, I have to say yes to the first question and no to the second. I used to run about inside that wheel for hours and every time I asked for water (in hamster language that is lying on your back with four paws up in the air singing 'Ferret he's a jolly good fellow'). and my owner never knew what I wanted. Eventually I had to write it down for him.

Yes, if you are prepared to make the mental leap and treat body language as a coherant method of communication.
Animals can communicate their emotion and intent via body language and facial expression. They are not isolated from each other. More sociable species have more complex language.
How much your dog obeys out of habit, and how much he actually understands the abstract concept behind your verbal language depends partly on how bright and sociable he is, and partly on how much effort you're prepared to put into teaching him.

Yes, we can understand how they are feeling by reading their body language, and by expressions and sounds. Examples:

They can understand when we are angry. For instance, yelling at a dog will make the dog cower and lower its tail between its leg. We understand they are scared.
When it is excited its tail is up and it runs around a lot.
Simple things like this shows humans can understand animals, and animals can understand humans.

It matters How long you're with them young animals won't understand but if you've been together for years they have learned the meanings of a lot of our words and we have learned the meanings of their sounds and actions so it all depends on experience

Of course they can understand us, they also know our moods, just we know theres. If my cat Drake is whipping his tail around and slants his eyes i know that he is in a very annoied mood. When i come hom is a good mood my Dog Astro can tell right away but if i am in a bad mood he knows he has to be calmer when he comes to greet me. :) all animals can understand humans to a certian degree as we can also understand all animals.

I think that a pet learns to understand you as well as you being able to understand them. Our Chihuahuas seem to understand what we say most of the time, and I can tell read them pretty well by their body anguage and everything what they are thinking, if anything is wrong, what they want, so to answer your question, the answer is yes.

Of course. They learn to understand command like sit, lay down, roll over. But have you ever noticed when you are sick or sad that your dog or cat does not want to leave your side? They can sense things just like we can.

to a certain point yes as we can understand body language and tone of voice you just have to be patient. animals don't hide their feelings if they don't like you they will be aggressive or run away!
similarly if they are hungry they will go to the place they usually get fed!
