First, pick out a famous guitar lick that has all the elements you want to achieve. Second, promise yourself you will duplicate every facet of the riff, including sound, style, speed, clarity.
Third, stay on it with laser focus until an honest friend will agree that you have nailed it.
There simply is no substitute for the painful process of working on it hour after hour until you are up to speed. No tricks will help, only sweat and blisters.

you should check out www.shredzone.com, those guys are a real big help over there.
If not get yourself a guitar world or an instructional video with someone like Alexi Laiho from Children Of Bodom, or Zakk Wyldd

Give yourself a goal, a short and precise goal, after you reach it reward yourself, switch pics and start a new short goal.
The next day practice your accomplished work and start a new one. Also, tape yourself so you can listen to your mistakes, when you do them over and over they start to sound fine, they are often off. Then after you got them show off to your friends, you're on your way.
