I think you should give a potential employer at least a few days to process your application , then a week later you should go there and ask for the manager and tell them you are just following up with your app and are wondering what is going on and when they might be available for and interview. This will give you some idea if they are even interested or not

Follow up letters, postcards, etc. usually end up in the same round filing cabinet. If you're serious enough about the job, either you call this person once a week, or show up to show how serious and interested you are about this position. I guarantee you that not many prospects are doing this, or are as dedicated.

Ask the person to tell you at what time / date he / she has reached a decision.
Tell them you need to know, yes or no, since your time is of value and you are pursuing various job offers.
