Wide Receiver/ Free Safety just means that he is cabable and able to play both positions, but not necessarily in the same game. Usually people like that have the attributes of Wide Receiver (catching, speed) and Free Safety (zone coverage, speed, strength). Most of the time they only play one of those positions a game or a season because their team might have Wide Receivers and Free Safeties that are specialized in only those positions. Either that or they only play the position they are best at. So basically Wide Receivers/Free Safeties usually only start in one position but may serve as a back-up in the other position or may even play it if the usual free safety or receivers are injured or unable to play. One example is Marcus Vick of the Miami Dolphins. On the roster this player was listed as Quarterback/Wide Receiver/Special Teams altough he will probably play most of his time as a quarterback because the Dolphins have already good Special Teams and Wide receivers and Vick is also better at Quarterback than the other 2 positions.

You also asked the signifigance of each position:

wide receiver- Responsible for catching most of the passes thrown by the Quarterback. They are important because they are able to gain large mamounts of yards on one play depending on their skill and the Quarterback's skill. They are the fastest players in football usually. Sometimes they block defenders and clear paths for running backs or other wide receivers.

free safety- The free safety is responsible for reading the offensive plays and covering deep passes. Depending on the defensive call, he may also provide run support. He is positioned 10 to 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage depending on the safeties speed and quickness so the distance depends. So basically he stays near the back of the field and guards against medium to long range passes to wide receivers .

Well that depends. If he is playing both wide reciever and free saftey, he's going to be in the game most of the time. Most teams will have 2 different people playing 2 different positions because usually 1 man playing both offense and defense will get tired by halftime.

Wide reciever plays on offense he catchs any passes that are thrown to him and free saftey is on defense he makes sure that the passes are disrupted or the running back does not get the touchdown.

The dual position means that the player will proably have to split time in between offense and defense, similar to what Troy Brown does for New England(NFL). The player may end up playing more defense than offense, because that position is a one man post unlike corner back

Futbol has changed a lot strategically over the years. When Brazil won their first two World Cups, they used to play with 6 forwards, 2 midfielders and 2 defenders, of course, other teams were doing the same. They used to do that until someone figure out how to stop the six forwards with a strong defense and just score one or two goals to win, I believe it was the Italians. That is how we got to the defensive futbol of today that is mostly played with one or two forwards. Anyway, I believe the very first futbol formation was the 4-3-3. Number 1 went to the Goalie. 2,3,4 and 5 to the defense. 6,7 and 8 to the midfielders and 9,10 and 11 to the forwards. 9 going to the center forward. Now days, the traditional numbering scheme has gone out the window. Probably the only consistent number now days are the number 1 and the number 10 for the goalie and the center midfielder.

wide recievers (offense) are the main pass catchers. they line up on the outside (with some exceptions). they also go upfield to block for the ballcarriers. they are signifigant if your team is a passing team.

free safety (defense) usually play zone coverage behind the line backers, but sometimes play man coverage. they are also the last hope for a tackle if someone makes it through the line/line backers/cornerbacks. they are signifigant if the other team has a deep pass attack.

hope this helps
