I have a PS2. Looking for some games where you can choose to either go on missions or just simply hang out and explore a city, as you can do in GTA Vice City. Prefer action/adventure rated (M)--mature games. I don't like games where I am forced to go along with a mission or story line.

San Andreas hands down. Vice city replaced into great in its day, and it nonetheless stands the attempt of time for being a competent game, yet Rockstar made a great progression with San Andreas. of direction, that's only my opinion. No actual precise or incorrect answer right here.

True Crime is like that (though it is only mediocre). the Driver series is also free-roaming (don't get Driv3r, get Driver: parallel lines). Destroy all humans is semi free-roaming. Mercenaries is also GTA-ish.
