firefox is more secure because not so tightly integrated with the operating system. and more virus writers tend to target microsoft products, but overall it is a choice of what you prefer. You will need explorer to access microsoft websites though, personally use it only when i absolutely have too.

Firefox provides various extensions and filters in order to protect yourself from unwanted intrusions.
