"I really have a good time when I'm with you. Would you like to come to a movie with me next Tuesday?"
If you ask him out - make a *specific* request. One that can be declined politely without rejecting the asker.
Consider a negative response to:
1) "Would you like to see a movie with me this Friday night?"
and
2) "Do you want to go out sometime?"
A "no" answer is not what you *want* to hear - but a no to the first question would be easier than a no to the second.

Tell him that you really like him as a friend and that you would like to go out with him and investigate friendship possibilities with him.
I hope it works out great for you!

You don't tell him. You let him ask you.
