Find something that relates to their life. If you make it about something they use everyday, or something they like, then it is bound to spark interest.

One suggestion - bring in a captivating speaker who works in science to talk about how it is important to them. Make sure you have a man and a woman if possible.

I have read about the motivational talks former astronauts Mae Jamison (sp?) and Sally Ride have done in schools, and how they have inspired some women onto science careers.

Good luck!

Show him...not just tell him...things in the everyday life...things that interests the teenager...show them the science behind them. Make it more hands on and more to the point.

what science are we talking about... chemistry, biology, physics???

let's see if it is chemistry... buy a few diet cokes 2 Liter bottles, and some mentos then take the kids outside and do the experiment of dropping the mentos in the diet coke bottle... it is hilarious... then ask them to decide if there are improvements or changes they would like to try... well without even knowing it they are acting like scientists!

if biology... try something like getting a local veterinarian to come in and do some CSI type of show for the kids on something gross like heart worms in dogs... or the coroner...

If Physics... shoot rockets...build them and then shoot them off in the football field... go to a local hobby shop and get the ESTES rockets... they are way cool.

science should be hands on... LABS do not have to be expensive...

If he's not interested he doesn't need to be motivated. Not interest does not mean however that he should fail. if you want to pass school you necessarily need interest even in things that don't interest you.
