so i have a family of sparrows living in my chimney. i first noticed peeping sounds about 2 weeks ago, and they have gotten progressively louder since then. now my house sounds like the aviary at the zoo. anyways, i figure that there is a nest with hatchlings in it and they are getting bigger. i realize that the quickest way to remove the birds would be to build a fire, however, i don't dig too much on killing baby birds. i was thinking about waiting until the birds are grown and leave the nest, however it is getting really noisy, and what if there are other nests as well? i am pretty sure that the birds are sparrows if that help with your advice any. thanks for the help!

ok, so i failed to mention that i live in the country. they don't even deliver mail there. the "city" i live in has about 100 people, no store or anything. soo, there are no municipal services or chimney sweeps available (although i love the idea of dick van dyke with a cockney accent coming over to sweep my chimney)

i called animal control and they told me to hire a chimney sweep, which will be expensive, because they have to travel. the lady at animal control also told me that i could wait for them to fly away from the nest and then light a fire to burn the nest out.

I had a family of birds living between my ceiling and my roof for over 20 years, and I watched the baby birds grow and learn to fly generation after generation, (until we had to remove the 2 Feet long nest because it was sinking the ceiling) My point is: they really are precious, don't hurt them for any reason. Call your local animal protection group, they'll help you remove the nest and relocate it somewhere safe. Ok, you live in the country, but there has to be a group or organization you can contact online.

I think you might be best served to call city hall and have them direct you to an animal removal specialist. Possibly they can suggest the most effective yet safe (for the birds) method of removal. Some cities and municipalities actually provide free services to actually conduct the removal. However. . . nowadays you might get put on a waiting list and by the time they get to you your current baby birds will be great great grandparents. Good Luck.

Hi do you have another vehicle that you can use ?It is illegal to move the nest with eggs or baby birds in it you have to wait them out.. You could call your local animal control and ask them if they could come out... But if you move the nest mom might not come back because now it has your smell on the nest .. Best to leave it alone...

they're probably House Sparrows, which are a pest. they are a non native species that hurts the native species. look it up onthe internet if you don't believe me. just kill them. after you make sure that they're not good birds, like chimney swifts or swallows or something like that

You'll need the following:

1 can of Gasoline (lighter fluid just not strong enough)
1 match
1 big pile of newspaper
1 long pole
1 fish dip net
1 coat hanger
1 bag

Put the big pile of newspaper in the fish net
attach the fish net to the end of the pole using your coat hanger
pour gasoline on newspaper
while holding fishnet inside chimney (strike match and throw on soiled paper)
quickly raise pole to push fire as high as possible into chimney.
When fire goes out and all birds fall dead to bottom, remove dead birds and put in bag to take to garbage can.

Problem solved
