Playing doubles: I served to my opponent, he could not return the serve effectively and slapped the return into the net. I thought the point was over hearing no complaint from the returner and I began moving to the other side of the court to serve out the next point when I noticed that there was some commotion going on between my partner and the other opponent (not the guy that returned the serve). I asked what was going on and the guy said it was a let because he was asking something to my partner while I was serving. His partner did not complain and he had ample opportunity to stop me from serving while I carried out my nornal service motion, we ended playing a let and we ended losing the point. My partner said the other guy was indeed asking him something (score related) but I believe he asked the question as I was serving. Any thoughts?

It sounds like poor sportsmanship on your opponent's end, but I think you did the correct thing by taking the high road and replaying the point.

The player waiting for your serve should have said something before you served, or his partner should have made some kind of motion indicating that he wasn't ready. It's not fair that you were forced to reserve because of their error, but you still did the right thing.

Your partner should have stopped you from serving while he was trying to resolve the score issue. And as the server (playing doubles), you should have looked at YOUR PARTNER and made sure he is ready before you started the serving motion. You don't want him (or her) unprepared, right? So, a let is the way to go. FIRST SERVE.

your opponent was being a jerk. it is a rule that there is no talkin allowed, especially when someone is serving. it can distract someone. this rule is loosely followed though, and really shouldnt have been enforced by anybody except u or the returner. i guess it was the right thing replaying the point and not gettin in an argument, but dont let yourself get pushed around. just a point can mean a whole lot
