Hi,
My problem is the following:
I recently got a 10Mb NTL cable connection.
I already have a Belkin wireless router, but it is not a stand alone device, it is a router and a modem combined. I used it for a previous connection when I had ADSL.
I have heard that in order to use cable ADSL wireless routing I need a stand alone router, BUT if I connect an ethernet cable to the ethernet port of the cable modem to one of the four ports of the router and then I connect my desktop's ethernet cable to the router I get internet connectivity. I also get wireless connectivity but none of my laptops can browse to the internet eventhough they are connected to the router...Are there any settings that I should take care about or is it hopeless since it is not a stand alone device? I can connect to the router wireless from a laptop and apply settings but not from the desktop...Whats going on??
Help please!? Since I get internet connectivity via the router..
Thank you in advance

Ok, there are a few things you will need to do to get your wireless connection working. You will need to locate your ssid on your network broadcast, make sure you are choosing your own wireless or at least the one you are intending to use. If you have wep or wpa security set, you will need to know the password to connect to the wireless router. Make sure your computer is within range of the wireless modem too.

Lastly, you will need to "refresh" your ip address.

click start > run > cmd (press enter or click ok)
on the black screen that opens type in ipconfig

if it says your ip address is 169.x.x.x where x is any number, then you have the windows default ip address and that is why you are not connecting.

type in ipconfig /release
type in ipconfig /renew

try to connect to your wireless router again for internet.

also check to make sure that your wireless router is set for the wireless card connected to your computer (also check that your wireless card is working properly (right click on my computer, select properties, select hardware tab, then click on device manager - any red or yellow marks??, if so right click the item and select update the driver)

in your router settings check that it is set to either b or g wireless whichever the wireless card on your computer is, or set it to "listen" for both.

Probably because there is only one IP address available due to the fact that you can't use the router in the wireless device. The laptops will get limited connectivity only. If you can't use the wireless router directly on the cable, then I think you might be out of luck here. You are going to have to get a wireless router that will work with your cable system (an approved one). One thing to try is to make sure the cable is the right kind of cable between the cable modem and the wireless router. You might need a flip over cable. The other thing is to make sure the network config in the laptops is on auto.

A prompt modem router will be a prompt router/modem blend and a prompt router would merely be a router on its own. in case you had severe-% cable information superhighway you'll choose a modem linked to a prompt router to get on-line.
