I know there's always the option to pass cars, or break the speed limit, but theoretically, if you HAD to choose the lower gear, or the higher gear, which one would be better?

BTW - I have a honda magna v-45 if that's at all relevant.

I always choose the lower gear, you're going to get more response if you need to hit the throttle.

I always hate that. I go with the lower gear because it's better to have the torque on hand in case of an emergency (like a little old lady backing out of her driveway, directly into you) than to be a little underpowered.

I usually run my bike between 2500 and 3000 RPM, though it can run just fine at 2100 or higher. It can run steadily at up to 4500 RPM without putting undue strain on the engine or transmission.

I hit the in between gears at 20 mph and usually run it in 1st, even though it makes me grit my teeth. Mostly, I tend to slow down in places like school zones or where the cops are and speed up into a comfortable 2nd gear, at about 25 mph.

I've got an H-D 883 Sportster.

The next higher gear should give better mileage and easier on the bike as long as you're not lugging it.
The next lower gear would be more responsive if you needed to accelerate.

The degreed mechanical and aerospace engineer doesn't know his butt from a hole in the wall. If I'm in traffic, I choose the lower gear and keep the revs up in case I need to scoot quickly. If there's no traffic, Ill put in in the next highest gear.

LOWER, these engines rev to 10,000

If the road is wet I might choose the higher gear for more grip

obviously, the lower gear is better for the bike, due to less wear (less rpms on the crank shaft for a given speed), higher running temp (cleaner burn), more efficient cooling, and a host of other reasons.

Higher gear...save the wear and tear on your engine....allows it to run cooler because of lower revs. Also saves fuel.

You will feel it. I like to go with the lower gear to make the pipes roar. Besides, motors don't like to be lugged.

Keep it in the higher gear as long as its not sputtering.
