TO QUALIFY TO TAKE THE POLICE OFFICER EXAMINATION, YOU MUST:

Be at least 20 years old (there is no maximum age limit).
Be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien. There is no residency requirement.
Have a valid driver license.
Not have been convicted of a felony in California or of an act in any other state or Federal jurisdiction or in any other county that would have been a felony if committed in California or any misdemeanor that carries a penalty prohibiting ownership, possession, or control of a firearm.
TO BE HIRED, YOU MUST:

Be at least 21 years old.
Have:
a U.S. high school diploma or
a G.E.D. or
California High School Proficiency examination or
two-year / four year degree from an accredited college or university
Be a U.S. citizen.
Successfully complete all components of the Police Officer examination and the background investigation process.

THE POLICE OFFICER COMPONENTS ARE:

A multiple-choice written examination that tests English grammar and syntax, spelling, vocabulary, and reading-comprehension skills.

A physical ability examination that measures strength, endurance, equilibrium, and flexibility. Additionally, a trigger-pull exercise that measures handgrip and arm strength.

A situation-response oral examination that tests oral communication skills, decision-making, self-control, and flexibility.

Candidates who pass the three-part Police Officer examination move on to the background investigation process.

THE BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION PROCESS CONSISTS OF:

A psychological evaluation that includes a written evaluation and an interview.
A polygraph examination that focuses on information provided in the candidate's personal history questionnaire.
An employment-character-background investigation.
A medical examination that includes a vision test, a hearing test, and height/weight measurements.
At the time of the vision test, your corrective lenses (glasses or hard or soft contact lenses) must be made available. Vision must be at least 20/30 either unaided or corrected with glasses or hard or soft contact lenses. If glasses or hard contact lenses are worn, uncorrected vision must be no weaker than 20/100. If soft contact lenses are worn, there is no limitation on uncorrected vision provided the wearer has successfully worn these soft lenses for at least six (6) months. All candidates must have entirely full visual fields and must achieve a passing score on a color-vision test.

At the time of the hearing test, the uncorrected auditory threshold for each ear in the speech frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000 and 3000 Hz should average 20 db, or less in the ANSI 69 calibration. Hearing loss in these frequencies should be no greater than 35 db.

At the time of height-weight measurement, the following standards will be strictly adhered to:

MEN WOMEN
HEIGHT MAXIMUM WEIGHT HEIGHT MAXIMUM WEIGHT
5' 151 4'6" 116
5'2" 159 4'8" 122
5'4" 167 4'10" 130

UK: 17 1/2 if you are clever, but 18 is the general age. Height is no longer an issue, nor is bad eyesight as long as you wear glasses. Colour blindness is a bar. You must be fit. You cannot have criminal convictions. You must pass an entrance examination. You must pass a confidential inquiry on your home and school behaviour. You must be able to write and speak English. I would suggest that anyone considering becoming a police officer, take up employment in the public sector for a year or two to get experience. Policing is a strange world but one which gives immense satisfaction, a good salary, a good way of life, and a good pension at the end of your service, usually 30 years................ If you fancy it, go for it..........

Have a look at my 360 blog (entry date 26 February) for a surprise on the subject.....

Well you can't choose best answer until 24 hours have passed, but any way, in most states I believe the minimum age is 18. You have to be at least a high school graduate and they put you through a series of test including physical and psychological. If you don't pass any which one of them you don't get in.

You need a high school diploma or GED or 3 years in the armed forces with honorable discharge.
Must be 19-32 prior to civil service exam and must pass the exam.
Must be a resident of that county or state (depends on which police force you're applying to).
Must pass a medical exam.
Cannot be a convicted felon.
Need a valid drivers lic. and birth cert. and SS card.

Some other rules apply...depends on the state or county requirements.

Sometimes I see an ad in the newspaper for police officer training and you must be 17 years old. My brother is going to do it when he turns 17.

If you are young, try something like a kiwanis camp, or volunteer for junior league activities, and keep your record clean. Then when you apply, you'll have shown true interest. Its seem the legal age should be 21.

Don't know your age, but in some states its a good thing if you get involved witht he ROTC. Every state and town have different guidelines. That would look better for you anyway. If you are older (18-21) then I would say your normal drinking age.

Police Officers are genetically pre-disposed for law enforcement at birth. Your best hope is to be a security guard at walmart.
