Basically self-destructive means that you habitually do something that is harmful to your body and can eventually lead to death. Some examples would be: over-eating to the point of morbid obesity, smoking, anorexia, drug abuse, alcoholism, cutting, huffing, etc.
So, I'll ask you again: Are you self-destructive? What habit do you have? Do you plan to stop or get help?

My habit is smoking. I want to stop but haven't been able to. I hope I can find a way to quit before it kills me.

Who isn't to some degree. Most people do it through the food they eat nowadays and becoming obese. But, as Frank Sinatra once said, "You die your way, I'll die mine". Lovely thought, huh?

I smoke occasionally, but whether or not it's actually self-destructive behavior is not what I'm thinking while I do it. Mostly I derive pleasure from it, which I imagine is what initially drives most people to do what may later become destructive behavior. Since I am not "addicted" I don't see the necessity to seek help and I perceive the reward to be greater than the risk, so presently I do not plan to stop immediately. This does not mean I am not aware that the behavior could kill me. I am not going to justify it with some asinine excuse such as "they lived a healthy life and died young anyway", but I am going to say that I am a conscious being and my behavior, while risky, is not necessarily destructive.

I used to be self-destructive. Three years ago, I was a self-mutilator. I cut up my arms until they looked like hamburger meat. I drove myself into a state of self-recklessness and uncontrol. I nearly went crazy.
But I got help and eventually stopped. I've been clean ever since. I don't even want to imagine where I'd be now if I didn't get help.

Cigarettes! I've been told to stop because I have a problem with my lungs and have been trying really hard for the past year but no luck. The patch helped some but the cravings eventually overtook it.

Take it from me: stop. I've had two heart attacks (not from smoking, though). I'd quit for four years. Guess what? I'm back at it. But a smoke goes soooo good with the first cup of coffee...
You will die if you smoke. Period.
