Depends on the store. I believe that Target allows individual stores the option of age-checking on R-rated movies. Surprisingly, they do have a strongly worded corporate statement regarding M-rated video games (pdf file linked below, pg 29), but nothing on R rated movies.
Since movie ratings are voluntary and not government-sanctioned, individual stores can sell or not sell any movie (except certain unrated or NC-17, sale of which are prohibited to minors due to laws proscribing content, not rating) to anyone they choose, depending on their policies.

They would probably ask for ID. They don't *have* to ask for ID, just like the theater doesn't *have* to ask for ID. However, for good business sake, they probably would.
It is not illegal for a 15 year old to buy, watch, or be sold an "R" rated movie or movie ticket.

Maybe. Im 27, and when my 22 year old fiance is with me, they card me like 75% of the time. I buy at Target alot too, and they only do it there. Try Walmart, they seem to care less.

They might. But I never faced this problem cause we were not allowed to bring in a R movie in the house well until we were 20 years old.
Out of respect to our parents we did not. Sometimes it is best to wait till it is time to do things. Right things at the right time....

i didn't get carded until i was 17 (old enough to buy movies and tickets) all the other times i would just purchase them with no ifs ands or buts! It all depends on how old you LOOK! and if they ask for your i.d. just tell them you forgot it but your birthday is something in 1988 (18 years) or 1987 (19 years) and see if that doesn't work...

By law, they are supposed to ensure that you are 17 or older to sell it to you.
In reality, the clerk may not even notice the rating, and just sell it to you without checking your age...unless it was porn or something.
