I used to get a little bell displayed on the yahoo tool bar. Now I have to click on my mail button before I know if there are any emails. What could have happened?

Maybe you have turned off sounds and alerts on your yahoo toolbar or the option to be alerted when you receive a new email?
Another method would be to:
Sign up for yahoo messenger and when you are signed in it will alert you each time you receive a new email message.
