This strange question stems from an urban myth that I heard, but I'm interested to find out if there is actually any truth behind it. My understanding of how Viagra and similar drugs work is to simply enhance/heighten arousal, but can they replace it altogether e.g. a man absolutely does not want to sleep with a woman, he may even be in a situation which causes him to fear for his life. Could he end up having an erection completely against his own will due to a drug which effectively tells his body to do the opposite of what his brain wants it to do?

It is clinically possible. After all, many men wake up in the morning with an involuntary erection, often associated with a need to urinate. Having said that, I doubt that any man, no matter how much viagra or the like he had been given, would be capable of maintaining an erection if he feared for his life. However, 'rape' is specifically a violent attack on a woman and cannot be applied to a male victim in any jurisprudence that I have heard of. Instead, it would simply be a matter of sexual assault, and up to a court of law to determine the level of seriousness of the offence in the event that the woman was convicted.

There are two points to consider:

If you do not have a drug like Viagra in your system, you must normally be sexually aroused or relaxed in order to have an erection.

If you do have a drug like Viagra in your system, it is much easier to have an erection, though it is helpful to be in a sexually aroused or relaxed state to have an erection.

If a man is forced to have sex with a woman, depending on the situation, the man might achieve an erection or might not depending on both the concentration of Viagra in his system, as well as the sexual arousal of the man.

Therefore, to answer your question directly and specifically, I would say that if the man's brain does not want to have an erection, no matter how much Viagra is in his system, he will most certainly not have one. This is because the brain and peripheral nervous system are what direct the blood vessels near and in the penis to dilate, causing an erection. If the nervous system does not "want" this to happen, it will not (unless there is a malfunction in the nervous system).

Practically yes but leagally, no. In law, rape has to be non-consentual penetrative sex. The view is that since a woman can not penetrate a man in the scenario you're describing, it can not be described as rape in (English) Law. However, it would constitute a serious sexual assault and may well result in similar sentencing.

I'm appalled at the number of men who assume that all men are all up for sex all the time. I'm sorry, but for me sex is a union between two people who love each other deeply and want to share an experience. Unless that was the motivation, I certainly would do everything in my power to stop it happening. I guess some of these guys are shallow, heartless and desperate.

Rape means to be forced to have sex against your consent. There is also a school of thought which argues that a man cannot claim a woman has raped him- if he is sexually aroused during the event. Howver, I 'm no lawyer but supposing a group of girls concern some unsuspecting man after spiking his drink and rape him. At court, the woman's defence lawyer may argue that there is clear evidence of his sexual arousal and ask for the case to be dismissed but if his lawyer is able to prove that his arrousal was caused due his drink been spiked, then he would win.

Actually, it's interesting (I use that word a lot these days, must think of something better) to note, (I'm sure I've said that before in another answer too), that it might also be possible for you to have an erection in your sleep as well.

Ask the girlfriend/wife to test that conjecture next time you are in lalaa land, and no that wasn't a stutter...

Probably, but the flight or fight responses in a man, who even fears for his life, could cause him to have an erection, even though he is completely unaroused in any other way. I know someone who was raped by a girl in his youth, he was so frightehned he got an erection and she just hopped on and helped herself. He laughs about it, but you can see in his eyes there is a feeling of shame and guilt.

Do you know how easy it really is to give a guy an erection. You could cut off a guy's foot and as long as you give him a BJ he'd have an erection. You wouldn't need viagra, trust me.

Of course women can rape men. Just because he has an erection, it doesnt mean that he wants to have sex, as the penis reacts to the stimulation whether he wants it to or not. His mind and his mouth may be screaming no, but his penis will probably be saying yes.
