What kind of engine can you put in a Honda 400EX without a lot of work?

A Hoover 12 amp motor. That wouldn't be much work.

as guy above said. you can also get a 440 Wiseco kit and cams . XR400 parts fit. Could probably get a XL/XR600/650 in there without too much hassle

There i sno other engine you can put in there without alot of work. If you want more power, get a K&N airfilter, a Thumper Racing pipe (or similar), and have your carb re-jetted.
