i'm moving in one month and i'm curious what advice anyone could give me on living in Germany. Also... are dogs allowed on the public transportation systems? (i'm bringing my dog and i've heard they're pretty much welcomed everywhere so i'm just wondering)

well, I am from Germany, so I will gladly try to answer any questions you might. Can you be a little more specific on what you want to know about living there?

One major thing you have to get adjusted to is that stores are not open 24/7. Grocery stores are usually open 8am-8pm and closed on Sun. Gas is way more expansive, right now about 6.50 -7$/ Gallon.

Re. the dog, they are allowed on public transportation systems, yes.

Germany is a wonderful country and Bavaria is gorgeous. There are quite a few differences to prepare yourself for. As the other person noted, shopping is not a 24/7 thing like in the states. Europeans seems to food shop more often so as to get the freshest items. Bread, fruits, veggies etc. Everything but pubs and restaurants is closed on Sundays and many restaurants are closed on Mondays. You'll want to brush up on the clothing and shoe size conversions and prepare to internet shop for bedding as the sizes are not at all the same. If you have special American food items you cannot live without, work a deal with a relative to send you a care package, otherwise enjoy the local cuisine and learn to cook new things. Your dollar will not go as far so I would suggest you think about winter clothes, shoes etc before you go. Shipping can be expensive overseas unless you are affiliated with the military and will be using the USPS. Germans are very nice people but you may find them a little cool at first. If you are lucky enough to make friends with a neighbor or co worker you can expect a friend for life. Volksmarch (organized walks through the countryside) are a great way to meet people.

Your dog will be very welcome everywhere including most restaurants as long as he or she is well behaved.

Be prepared to recycle, recycle, recycle

If you intend to use the train often and I suggest you do, ask about a bahn card. There are often great savings involved.

Finally, the best way to learn about any country is to be observant of the locals, and do as they do or don't.

I wish you all the best!

In Bavaria, the world famous King Ludwig's Neuschwanstein Castle is definitely worth seeing, because Disney World's castle was modelled after it.
