The Korean War started as a civil war between North Korea and South Korea. When it began, North and South Korea existed as provisional governments competing for control over the Korean peninsula, due to the division of Korea.
The "Cold War" war between the Democratic powers of the United States and its allies versus the Communist powers China and the Soviet Union took the war to a global level. North Korea was mainly supported by China, and later the Soviet Union who supplied combat advisors, aircraft pilots, and weapons. South Korea was mainly supported by the United States, Great Britain, and many nations under the United Nations.
In 1950, the South Korean/US/UN troops drove the North Koreans back past the 38th parallel. The goal of saving South Korea had been achieved, but because of the success and the prospect of uniting all of Korea under one government (not to mention the potential of destroying a Communist nation), the Americans - with UN approval - were convinced to continue into North Korea. The UN troops then captured Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, and drove to the Yalu River bordering China. This greatly concerned the Chinese, who worried that the UN forces would not stop and would invade China. General MacArthur disregarding the concerns of other Western leaders, thought it necessary to bring the war into China and bomb their supply bases. This brought China full scale into the war and the northern forces pressed deeply back into Korea nearly taking over the entire peninsula themselves.
After much more conflict the peninsula was split again, with South Korea capturing nearly all of what was South Korea before. A cease-fire was established on July 27, 1953, at which time the front line was back to the 38th parallel. A demilitarized zone (DMZ) was established around it, which is still defended today by North Korean troops on one side and South Korean and American troops on the other.
You should read more up on this on your own. It is very interesting how the global politics led up to this war and how it influenced the onset of the Vietnam War. This conflict is still current impacting global politics today.

A good encyclopeadia and/or a good history book will tell you what you need to know in this regard. Not only that, doing a google on the subject of Korean War, or, any kind of search at all, will give you the results you want.
The only problem is, you have to do the work for yourself.
