These GM "N" bodies are notorious for noise from the rack ends. Also known as inner tie rod ends. They will start with a rub and then go to a squeak then they will move to popping noise. Without looking at the car that would be my best guess as to the noise. You would be best to go to a Pontiac Dealer and have them try and find it. If they can't notice it right away perhaps you can ride with the tech or advisor to demonstrate the noise you are hearing.
Hope I was helpful.

My 2000 GT does the same thing. It happens when you turn the wheel. I, too, have had it checked out and there appears to be nothing there. It only does it sometimes---I notice it more when it has been raining. It sounds like a rubbing, but not a quiet rub, like if you would rub your hands together. It's more like a creaking door hinge needing oiled type of rub. I don't feel anything, it doesn't hinder my turning or affect anything else. It can't be explained. We have checked everything.

appears like the wheel barrings... yet come on.. $1000? Thats ridiculus. I only had my left rear wheel barring replaced in my Grand Prix. It changed into making a "rubbing" and a "grrrr" noise - rather when I grew to develop right into a nook. have you ever noted it getting worse. Mine did not take too lengthy to get louder because it were given worse. Anywho, it only cost my about $three hundred with labour so i imagine that $1000 is somewhat overpriced. i'd recommend you bypass get a 2d opinion. Take it to an excellent storage like a GM dealership. Their labour expenditures are somewhat extra yet they manage their clientele good and are truthful and solid compared to places like Canadian Tire.

Brake pads worn out. Maybe the plastic inner splash shield is loose.
