The Comcast DVR (Motorola made DVR) is the property of Comcast, you are only leasing it from them, so you shouldn't go messing with it. One way they would "know" that you tampered with the box is if there is a tamper seal only the edge of the box where the cover meets the chassis.

I have no clue what filesystem format or what file protection schemes may or may not be in place which might hinder taking the hard drive out of the Motorola DVR and getting it recognized by a PC.

The possible ways to transfer programs from your Comcast DVR to a PC are to:

1) Use a video DVD recorder (not the kind you hook up to your PC) and record the shows in real time. I have a friend who does this with DirecTV DVR. Burn a DVD and then transfer that to the PC.

2) Use a video card or video USB adapter on the PC and record the video from the DVR that way.

3) Read the Motorola FAQ on how to transfer programs to a PC using Firewire.

No. The data format for the DVR is much different from the format on a PC. The PC would have no way of identifying the information because it is a completely different filing system on the DVR.

Also, consider that the hardware digital to analog converter embedded into the DVR is much more powerful than any software converter that you could create for the PC. Thats part of the reason why DVD's played in PC's tend to be a bit more choppy and not as clear and smooth as it is in a set top DVD player.

No, you can't unless you are an experienced hacker.
Cable companies make sure you cant access the drive from anywhere but their own box.
Im also pretty sure Comcast could find out

I don't see the point in this, unless you have been recording/watching porn and you can't get rid of the evidence. But I don't see why Comcast would care unless of course your selling it or something. And unless they hacked into your computer (like say I worked for Comcast or something) and then found it. ;-)

In concept it is going to artwork like previous. many of the records on the former hardcontinual may should be as a lot as date for the recent equipment board, video card and sound chipset and the i/o chipset and so on. in case you try this even as booting up for the first time, bypass into secure mode in living house windows and do an set up of the motherboards gadget drivers to over journey the former ones for the former pc and then reboot and it ought to artwork kind of ok. The video and sound and so on ought to should be finished after the first boot up and also you should keep doing this for quite a few circumstances to position in each and each and every of the gadget drivers you pick to replace. i understand it truly is a soreness in spite of the indisputable fact that it does artwork as i have finished it before. one ingredient, do not set up too many gadget drivers right now and attempt to do all of it right now as this does no longer always artwork top so do the motherboard, then video then sound and so on all personally because it quite works better and a lot less confusion as living house windows needs to reboot after each and each and every set up anyhow. This purely takes time to finish that lengthy because the hardcontinual isn't too previous and the recent motherboard will help it (connects).
