Fishing is correct, and that comes to around 2/23". Just look at the grooves and you will notice places where the grooves are raised a little. These are called wear bars, and the measurement should be taken there.
Also make sure you check all the way across the tire, because sometimes the wear is mostly on the inside edge where it doesn't show as much. If the wear is uneven get an alignment as soon as you get the new tires, otherwise the new tires will have the same problem.

They say if you take a penny, insert it into the tread with the top of Lincoln's head in the tread, his top of his head should be inside the tread. If you can still see the top of his head, the tread is worn down you need new tires. If you have bad tread wear, like along an edge, or uneven, you may need to get an alignment along with replacing the tires.

From what I know of Hyundais, your car is pretty close to needing to be replaced!

depends how the car has been driven. but it also depends what tires you have on it. I'm not sure but my guess is that you should be able to make another 7,000 or so miles on it.
