I know women want to help with hot flashes and whatever their female problems are but I have a friend that went out of state and came back with foals that were from horses used for the making of the hormones women take. She said they have these horses bred and then they stand in a stall for months with a bag attached to them to collect their urine to make the drug. When the foals are born they are slaughtered or people adopt them so that the mares can be rebred to keep producing urine for this hormome replacement therapy women take. What do you feel is cruelty, A few years of discomfort or the torture of these horses. My friend said it was not a pretty site to see.I had heard this was what the hormones are made from but I never knew it to be so sickening !

I've never heard of such of thing! This is horrible. I would give into drug therapy when absolutely necessary for comfort in life, but not at the expense of this! I will consider more carefully where things come from first.

The drug that they make is called Premarin®, which stands for Pregnant Mares' Urine (PREgnant MARes' urINe). I have no idea if they slaughter the foals though. That wouldn't make any sense because it's wasteful. In any industry where they use animal products, they tend to use ever part of the animal, and little if anything is ever wasted. Even the county animal shelters. The ones where I live send the carcases off to L.A. to be processed as fertilizer.

This is no worse than abortion. Who gives a sh*t about horses standing in a stall all day, peeing in bags when there are people who are having their unborn baby's body parts sucked out of their uteruses? It's a shame for the foals (much the same as the way veal calves are raised is a shame), but a) have you ever had a hot flash? If so, you might think twice about deciding to take the HRT afterall; and b) there are more important things to worry about.

Yes- it's a medication for hormone replacement therapy and it's called Premarin. I agree with you that it's wrong and disgusting, but most people just don't care.

Where's the proof of this statement? Can you cite a reference other than your friend?
