I went to a heavily advertised shoe store and discovered that they don't use the old width designations, but rather they were sold as regular, wide and extra wide. The old D designation meant "wide" and DD meant extra wide. Yet a "wide" shoe is too narrow for me.

It isn't necessarily your foot, it could be the brand of shoe. I've noticed that if you compare the same designation amongst different brands of shoes the widths tend to vary. Also, if you are buying designer shoes (like Liz Claiborne) the shoes tend to be on the narrow side. Naturalizer shoes tend to be on the wider side for the designation.

Your foot is too wide and fills the space in the D shoe. So stop trying to beat the system and buy DD shoes.
