Because if they were not racist, they would be ageist, sizeist, sexist, etc. In other ways just realize that everyone is judging others in one way or another. If they didn't have race they would think badly of your religion, or something - anything else. It is human behavior to want to be able to categorize people and then stay with the groups that you know. So try not to let it bother you.

The attitudes & actions of people who are racist say more about them than they do about you. People often learn from their parents. The best you can do is maintain your self-esteem, treat people with respect, and if you become a parent strive to raise a child who is open and tolerant.

Because since the beginning of time someone has always profited from pitting "you" against "them."

"They" are different because of what they believe / what they wear / how they live / how they look. "We" are better off if we dominate "them". That way, we don't have to look at ourselves and resolve our own problems. We can just blame "them".

People don't want to think on their own. They rely on racial stereotypes. And people fall into their own racial stereotypes because they are afraid of being seen as "one of them". If the guy across the road is one of "them" and he wears blue all the time, heck, you will never wear blue, right? Lest your friends think you are one of those crazy blue wearing men.

Your question is as old as the history of man. Racism will never end. It can only be displaced or replaced with hatred of another group. So, it's ok to be black in this country, well, we should blame our problems on the other guys who wear turbans over in the middle east.

Such is the pathetic history of men, which this country shows absolutely no sign of breaking.

This country is embarassingly short on tolerance. All that "open arms" melting pot crap is just crap. You live in a country intolerant of any indication of independence and power from homosexuals, women, blacks, yellows, reds, pick your color.

I'm sorry, I'm not that way either, and I can't understand why anyone would want to be that way in this day and age.
