He probably memorized his talking points and was probably more comfortable speaking them back then. The fed/presidency is a different ballgame.
Plus, it could be that the drugs and alcohol are showing their effects now.
He could have been high/drunk at the time he did the good stuff. Consequently, he may have been more at ease talking then compared to now.
