There is a wonderful article on this at:
http://www.centerforendo.com/articles/cystclopedia.htm
One note I did want to mention, if your cyst is diagnosed as a "chocolate" or "endometrioma," then chances are very high that you have Endometriosis. If that is the case, I recommend seeing the rest of the site above and also http://www.endocenter.org for lots of free info and support.

Unfortunately many times. The first time I was 15 and went because of pains and found a cyst on each ovary, one the size of a grapefruit and another a little smaller. I had surgery and followed up with birth control. My body however still didn't cooperate and after about 1-1/2 yrs, I would go back to the doc, have surgery and change the type of pills/shot for birth control. About a year ago I went back in and found multiple cysts, but after changing pills, they were gone in about 3 months. The pains can drive you crazy, and there is no real rhyme or reason (other than hormonal) but just try to stay on top of it. My doc says there not necessarily harmful, just painful.
In the event you do need surgery, standard is for laproscopy where they go through your belly button and make 2 very small incisions also right above your pelvic bone. It's an outpatient procedure and they say you should be back to normal in a day, but I always tried to schedule mine on a Friday so I could recover over the weekend. Hopefully you can get on some pills to get your body back in a groove. Good luck!

If the cyst is large depending on how large they will remove it like they did mine before it ruptures. Mine was the size of a grapefruit and did rupture and I had to go to emergency surgery due to the blood building up in my pelvis. They say birth control pills help the cysts but ?? who knows. Take some advil for the pain and use warm heating pad. Go to er if pain really bad. Good luck to you.

Ovarian cysts can grow and shrink with hormones. Therefore birth control pills will help, then they watch it and watch how you feel. I have gone through this and my daughters have.

I just received this news myself yesterday. My doctor says that she has to remove it because of it's size. It can be cancerous or cause other complications.
