A high school student may need money for transportation or food, but beyond that if he or she wants money, let them earn it.

That includes an "allowance" provided to youngsters so that they learn to value and handle money. If they choose to use their money in that manner, then they will soon learn how far it goes.

The other poster who said provide the tickets for meals or the bus, or otherwise arrange it, is dead on.

My kids earned their allowance by fulfilling not only their basic daily duties - and they had a checklist - but also by doing extra. No one got money just for being a participating member of the family - and no one got any by not participating. I found that the kids did well with about $20 a month - but by now in most places that should be about double. OF COURSE they never got it all at once.

And while we're on the topic, seperately each of the kids got $100 a year to invest in savings, penny stocks or other revenue-earning things.

When I was in high school my parents made me get a job to pay for the things I wanted, they didn't give me money for anything. If I didn't want to buy lunch I had to make my lunch. I'm glad they did that, I not only learned "a penny saved, a penny earned" but it made me appreciate the fact life isn't about things being easy, it's about having respect for yourself and achieving your goals. This translated well into university, and I really believe it's made me more successful.

Enough for lunch. When I was going to school, that was 25 cents. I also had enough for one phone call from a pay phone -- but, since I didn't call every day, I was expected to keep that money from day to day and not spend it on anything other than a phone call.

I think 5-10 bucks should do it if you have a job, don't expect parents to shell out cash like that.

enough for lunch and I recommend paying for the lunch ticket so that is what it is used for. Send a check for all other activities. prevents buying drugs, cigarettes, and things to get in trouble with.
